Author Interview - Mikey Brooks

Please welcome author Mikey Brooks to the Far Edge of Normal. Don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the post!

Mikey Brooks is a small child masquerading as an adult. On occasion you’ll catch him dancing the funky chicken, singing like a banshee, and pretending to have never grown up. He is the author/illustrator of the best-selling middle-grade series The Dream Keeper Chronicles, The Stone of Valhalla, and The Gates of Atlantis: Battle for Acropolis. His picture books include the best-selling ABC Adventures: Magical Creatures and Bean’s Dragons. His art can be seen in many forms from picture books to full room murals. He loves to daydream with his three daughters and explore the worlds that only the imagination of children can create. Mikey has a BS degree in English from Utah State University and works fulltime as a freelance illustrator, cover designer, and author. As a member of the Emblazoners, he is one of many authors devoted to ‘writing stories on the hearts of children’ (www.emblazoners.com). You can find more about him and his books at: www.insidemikeysworld.com

You are welcome to follow Mikey on all of his social media sites:

Tell us about your writing - What genre do you prefer to write? What books, stories, other publications that you've written are your personal favorites? Anything new coming up?

I write mainly for kids although adults enjoy my books too. I am the author/illustrator of several picture books including: ABC Adventures: Magical Creatures and Bean’s Dragons. My middle grade books include: The Dream Keeper Chronicles, The Stone of Valhalla, and a new fantasy adventure in The Gates of Atlantis series: Battle for Acropolis. I am currently finishing up the final book in the Dream Keeper Chronicles: The Dream Makers, which I hope to have available this fall.

I can’t say which my favorite is because I have enjoyed each project differently. All of them I had tons of fun creating and I hope to continue to create fun filled stories for kids to devour.

What about you as a person? What do you do to relax? Favorite movies or tv shows? Hobbies?

I am Wonder Woman’s husband…shh don’t tell, but she really is. We have three beautiful daughters. I am a family man. I love spending time with the kiddos and just goofing off. When the girlies go to bed I snuggle up with Wonder Woman and we watch movies, mostly chick flicks.

What gets your creative juices going? Do you write to a music, and do you want to share your playlist?

I get my ideas from just about anywhere. It could be a line from a movie, a strange picture in the National Geographic, or a question one of the girlies ask me. When I write, I have to have absolute silence. Normally during my writing day, Thursdays, Wonder Woman takes the girlies to grandma’s house. I have to fully emerge myself in my world. It plays out in my head like a movie and it’s a movie I have to give my fullest attention or I miss something.

"All writers must have cats, especially if they write fantasy or speculative fiction." Do you have a stand on this one? Any cute pictures of your kitty or other pet?

Oh my gosh, I HATE cats! Probably because of the cat my mom had when I was in high school. It always came down in the middle of the night moaning like it had just been ran over. No matter what I did it felt the urge to torment me while I slept. I do have four parakeets, which for the most part are just pretty to look at and kind of annoying with how loud they get. We also just adopted a cute little doggy we named Stormy.

What organizations do you recommend for those wanting to become writers? Any advice you'd like to share about writing?

I don’t get a lot of writing time in during the week because I am focusing mostly on my clients projects (either covers, illustrations, or formatting) so I have to utilize the time that I have. I can’t afford to sit there thinking about what to write…so I write out the scene in my head the days that lead up to Thursday. I am constantly thinking about what is going on and what is about to happen next. I totally recommend writers do this. You’ll write so much more efficiently.

What writers inspired you to become an author?

Three authors had a big impact on me: L Frank Baum gave me my love of stories with his Oz books, C.S. Lewis continued that love of magic in words, and finally when I wanted to become a writer, J.K. Rowling’s’ story really impacting me. Now that I am a writer, I am constantly inspired by the authors around me. It’s good to have mentors and role models. Some of my current ones include: J. Scott Savage, James A. Owens, and Jennifer A. Nielsen.

Any special appearances or events coming up that you want to mention?

Oh yes! I am a part of The Gates of Atlantis series. I was privileged to illustrate the covers for all six book and write the final book in the series: Battle for Acropolis. Those kick off next week. We’ll be having signing in Utah. One on August 9th at the Hastings in Ogden from 3pm-5pm. Another signing in Provo at Provo Beach on August 15 from 3pm-6pm. I’ll also be at Salt Lake City ComicCon in September.

If you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?

Hmm… this is a good one because there are so many places I’d love to visit. I like the times of the Musketeers. I’d also like to visit the Regency time period. Maybe even go back and see the pyramids before nature took hold. However, I am a fan of modern comforts like indoor plumbing and air conditioning. While these places would be good to visit, I wouldn’t want to permanently stay there.

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? What food would you serve?

Can I just sit down with all of them and have a BBQ? That would be ideal for me.

If you could travel anywhere, on earth or off, where would you go?

I would definitely go to the UK. I have always wanted to go there and feel a strange connection with the Brits. I think there is this romantic idea about the UK that still has a great hold on me. I’m not sure If I’d ever come back after going.

What color would you wear if you had only one choice?

Today I say blue. Tomorrow it will probably be another color. My favorite color changes every day.

Describe your dream writing spot.

I am trying to create that now. I just try to surround myself with things that make me happy and inspire me. Pictures of fun art, quotes that help in my determination, stuff like that. I’d like to say a tree house like J.K. Rowling, but I’m not sure if I’d get enough writing done. I’d probably just want to play.

for a chance to WIN a $25 Amazon Gift card and other great prizes!

Synopsis:

Aaron was chosen to save their world, but it might come at the cost of losing his own.

Breaking into an old lady’s basement was supposed to reward 13-year-old Aaron with new friends. Instead he finds an enchanted amulet that transports him to another world—one at war with magic. Before he knows it, he is accused of witchcraft and invited to a bonfire—where he’s the main attraction. If that’s not bad enough, a goblin army shows up and toasts the town...literally. The good news: Aaron escapes being charbroiled. The bad news: the goblins are after him. They want his amulet and will stop at nothing to get it. Battling to find his way home, Aaron teams up with a not-so-magical-wizard and learns it’s his fate to destroy the amulet and save this new world. But is he willing to sacrifice his own?
Check out what these talented authors are saying about it:

“The Stone of Valhalla is one of those books that only comes along once in a great while. Brooks doesn't just create a world, he puts you inside of it, allowing you to experience the wonder in a way that only he can. His characters are likable and fun. His twists leave you asking ‘Why?’ Treat yourself to an exciting adventure through a beautiful new land. Make new friends and be a part of the magic. This is a book that you will not be able to put down!”
—J.R. Simmons, author of Ragesong: Awakening.

“The Stone of Valhalla drew me in from the get-go. Aaron’s journey is reminiscent of Dorothy’s trek in The Wizard of Oz. Magic, sword fights, danger, and more danger, sprinkled with humor and unexpected twists. This is one of the ‘best’ fantasy adventures I’ve ever experienced!”
—BBH McChiller, author of The Monster Moon Series.

“The Stone of Valhalla is a riveting mystery revealing true friendship, loyalty and sacrifice. Brooks engages the curiosity of middle graders and older sleuths alike, until the very end. Fantastic!”
—L.R.W. Lee, author of The Andy Smithson series.

Excerpt From: Chapter Two: The Penalty of Witchcraft

Aaron thought he’d been transported to some kind of renaissance fair. People milled about in the street, all dressed like they belonged on the set of some medieval movie. Most of their faces were stained with dirt, and they wore soiled clothing. Large, wooden buildings, held together by plaster, loomed overhead and all around him. Some had signs announcing specific trades and goods. The sweet smell of bread came from one shop, clearly a bakery. A rotund man stood out front, arguing with an old man who had a silvery- white beard and a long, purple cloak. He was telling the baker that the rolls he had purchased tasted ‘day-old’ and he required a reimbursement.
Several passersby gave Aaron odd glances. One little girl with a group of women dressed like nuns pointed at him and giggled. He thought he heard her call him a buffoon, but she was quickly shushed by one of the women and pulled into a shop.
This is so unreal.
Aaron couldn’t figure out what had happened.
How did I get here? Who are these people?
Aaron waited for someone to jump out and yell, “Surprise, you’re on camera!”
It never happened.
The seconds drew on like hours, and Aaron stood unmoving like a statue in the middle of the dirt road. The sweet smell from the bakery was drowned by the stench of a sweaty mule pulling a cart packed full with what had to be manure. The wind blew and the wafting smell of poo filled Aaron’s nose. He coughed and tried to cover the reek with his shirt.
“Witchcraft! Witchcraft, I say!”
Aaron turned around to see a middle-aged woman with only three teeth shouting hysterically. She pointed directly at him. He looked over his shoulder to ensure no green-skinned, broom-commandeering, warty-faced lady in black stood beside him. There wasn’t anyone there. The noise on the street stopped dead except for the woman. She grabbed a small wooden crate from a cart filled with fresh flowers and stood on it. “Fetch the constable! Don’t let him get away, or he’ll set a curse on our town.”
Five large men formed a group behind the woman and advanced toward Aaron. He didn’t know what to do.

Interview with Mikey Brooks

Tell us about your writing - What genre do you prefer to write? What books, stories, other publications that you've written are your personal favorites?

I love to write stories for kids. I have picture books and middle-grade books. I love writing for kids because they already believe in magic so it is easy to open a new world for them to explore. My first picture book was Bean’s Dragons and I think it will always be my favorite book only because it’s a story about my daughter and her imaginary dragons. I think the more personal a book is to an author the more attached they are to it.

What about you as a person? What do you do to relax? Favorite movies or tv shows? Hobbies?

I love to just spend time with my girls. I have 3 daughters and they love to play pretend. We will tear apart the living room couch and imagine it’s a pirate ship. We’ll explorer the ocean and find treasure islands. A second later that ship is a submarine and we’re mermaid hunters. Another minute passes and we’re on our way to the moon in a rocket. There is nothing you can’t do with a couch and four heads of imagination. At night when the kiddos are in bed I like to snuggle next to my wife and watch movies. We like “feel good” movies, you know, the ones that make you feel better about yourself when it’s over. We also like magical shows like Once Upon a Time or Charmed.

"All writers must have cats, especially if they write fantasy or speculative fiction." Do you have a stand on this one? Any cute pictures of your kitty or other pet?

HA! I do not like cats! To me cats are the worse pet in the world. Half the time I wonder who is the pet when it comes to a cat. I’m a dog lover. Although I don’t have one now, my lab passed away two years ago, I hope to have another. I do have some really squawky birds, 4 parakeets; they specialize in headaches.

What organizations do you recommend for those wanting to become writers? Any advice you'd like to share about writing?

I think there are some great groups you can be a part of. Some require a membership fee and some do not. The first on my list is to join the Authors’ Think Tank. It’s a Facebook group of about 900 authors, with all levels of success. You can check them out at their blog at www.foreverwriters.com. Next I’d check for local writers’ groups. In Utah we have what’s called the League of Utah Writers. They have local chapters that meet weekly or monthly. It is good to meet and get to know other writers because we help each other to succeed in our goals. Writers are like family, we understand each other. If you write for kids, I’d recommend the Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators. They have a membership fee but they also work with local chapters and have very large conferences.

What writers inspired you to become an author?

L. Frank Baum is the one who got me reading as a kid and is the instigator of my love of middle-grade fantasy. I have all of the Oz books and share them with my daughters. They will forever remain on my favorites list.

Any special appearances or events coming up that you want to mention?

I have the blog tour for The Dreamstone running now until December 16th. You can check out the full line up at my website: www.insidemikeyworld.com. We have some great giveaways so make sure you enter the contest. Also the audiobook for The Dream Keeper is now available. I encourage you to check that out. It is pretty amazing!

If you could travel to any time in history, when would you visit?

I’d have to say the 17 century. I’ve always loved Alexandre Dumas and his tales of swordfights and noble brotherhood. I’d want to be a musketeer for a day. Learn how to ride a horse and swordfight, maybe even challenge a man to a duel.

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? What food would you serve?

I’d love to have the whole cast of The Dream Keepers for dinner, nightmare NOT included. I think I’d have it lax and serve pizza. I’d love to just chat with them and catch up on life.

If you could travel anywhere, on earth or off, where would you go?

England. I have always had a fascination with the United Kingdom. I love everything about it. One day I hope to visit there.

What color would you wear if you had only one choice?

Brown. I don’t know why but that’s what I’d wear.

Describe your dream writing spot.

I like it quite, clean (I can’t write if the room is messy otherwise I want to clean), and against a black wall. I do that now and for some reason it helps. Maybe it’s because nothing is distracting me. I can fully delve into the world I’m creating.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I am excited to announce the release of book two in middle-grade fantasy series THE DREAMSTONE. It is an action-packed adventure with a toe in both the real world and the fantastic.

DREAMS:

Dorothy called it Oz,
Alice called it Wonderland,
but Nightmares call it HOME.

When Parker’s mom is dreamnapped by the wicked Mab, it is up to him and Kaelyn to save her. When they return to Dreams, they discover Mab isn’t their only problem. Gladamyr has lost his powers and the only way to get them back is to become what he fears the most—a nightmare.

SYNOPSIS:
In Book 1, The Dream Keeper, Parker and Kaelyn discovered that Dreams was a real place that everyone visits while they sleep. An evil nightmare named Fyren took control of the gateway to that world. Parker and Kaelyn teamed up with Gladamyr, the only dream keeper to escape capture by Fyren, and together they save Dreams from Fyren’s rule. After the defeat of Fyren the children return to Awake to find Mab, Fyren’s next in command, has dreamnapped Parker’s mom.

The story continues in Book 2, The Dreamstone, as the children return to Dreams to save Parker’s mom. Finding her, however, is not their only problem. Mab has waged a war on the Crossing and has sent an army of dragons to bring it down, nightmares have been released from prison, and Gladamyr has lost his powers to shape-shift. Parker, Kaelyn, and Gladamyr must once again defy all odds to set things right and save Parker’s mom before it’s too late.

In Praise of THE DREAMSTONE:
“The Dreamstone, by Mikey Brooks, is a wild stallion of a story: fast, thrilling, and unpredictable. I was hooked in chapter one. If he can snare the attention of an old reader like me, he’ll have kids sneaking this one into class underneath their text books…If this one isn’t a kid-pleaser, I don’t know what is.” –Michelle Isenhoff, author of the Divided Decade Trilogy and the Taylor Davis Series.

“This really is a cracking novel. Action-packed and spellbinding!”—Cas Peace, author of The Artisans of Albia series.

"If you like the Percy Jackson, Fablehaven, or the Harry Potter series, you'll love this!" –An Amazon Reviewer.
